What are your intentions?

For several years now, at the start of the new year, I have searched for and shared my “word” for the year. This has often been a word or phrase that I sought through prayer and/or by reading various books and articles to help guide my thoughts and actions for the year ahead. Although a lot of people do this, they enlist various methods for coming up with their word as well as different ways to use it or focus on it in the days ahead.

If you’re not sure how to get started, here are some thoughts from a few other writers/sources that might assist you in discovering your word or phrase for 2020 and understanding the benefits of coming up with one.

The first step to manifesting anything you desire is awareness and intention. A Word of the Year will set you in the right direction by bringing more awareness to your intentions.” Elizabeth Rider

Dayspring.com asks, “What if you replaced your resolutions with truth from God’s Word? What if you chose to focus on this one theme all year, helping you filter decisions, calm emotions, and face each day with resolve?” They have a 7-question quiz to help you find your word that you might want to check out.

Heidi Kundin from Happiness Is Homemade provides some thoughts on the trend of choosing a word of the year – “I wanted to choose something meaningful that would guide me through the year and be a compass throughout life’s many decisions, something that would encourage me to be the best version of myself.” On her website, she provides a list of 150 Word of the Year Ideas (in scrollable or printable formats). If you’re drawing a blank, this might be a good place to get some ideas.

This year, I took my direction from some thoughts shared in Valerie Alexander’s First Wednesday Happiness Letter of the New Year, a weekly newsletter that I subscribe to. She shared the following:

“This time last year, I shared the exercise that my friend, the sassy Debra Trappen, created for the start of the year. It was to come up with a word that defined your intention for the year, then create an anagram of that word to guide you towards that intention. [Valerie has since noted with input from a reader that “anagram” is actually not the right word. It’s an “acrostic.”]

My intention last year was to worry less and accept more, so my word was TRUST, which turned into:
Take a deep breath
Relax
Unwind
Savor the Moment
Thank the Universe for all that you have and all that you are.

And you know what?
It worked!
I did worry less last year and reaped the blessings that came with all of those guiding actions.”

I have to admit, there have been times in the past when I have started out strong, but let my focus waver as the year went on. I liked the idea of the acrostic giving more definition to my word and providing me with some reminders of what might help me achieve it as well as measure it. After too many years of focusing primarily on work and professsional goals, this year I want to focus on a personal goal – to discover and experience more enjoyment in life. So, my 2020 word of the year is ENJOY!

I want to expect and be open to amazing things happening in my life; notice and be grateful for everyday blessings; take more day trips and other types of trips with my husband where we truly step away from work and daily expectations; enjoy nature more; and make/take time to be creative and have fun doing it. None of these things are difficult; they just take focus and making the right things … the things that really matter … a priority.

Think about what matters to you. What do you want to see and experience more of in 2020? What is your intention and how can you bring it about?

    I read this this morning and enjoyed it. I was just spending some time yesterday on the fact that I have had all of these ideas and goals over the years, many of which I still believe to be worth pursuing. But the one thing that has prevented me from being where I could be is not taking the proper action. So doing the exercise my word for the year would be ACTION.

    Acknowledge it is my responsibility to make things happen

    Choose how I spend my time “I must do the most productive thing possible at any given moment:

    Take responsibility, achieving or not achieving a goal is on me

    Inspire others to act, “you can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want”

    Open myself to the possibilities of how my goals may manifest themselves

    Never stop trying, no matter what keep going
